PostSubject: Utilizing Existing Anchors For State Improvement   Thu Nov 13, 2008 2:38 am

This is a quick description of a technique I just came up with off the
top of my head (although it's possible that someone else has already
thought of this and uses it......it's highly likely). So I won't claim
to be the discoverer of this technique. I'm sure someone else stumbled
on it before me and this is mainly as an experiment. Try it. See if it
works for you.

You already have natural gestures and ways you hold your body that make
you feel less anxious or more relaxed. You adopted these
subconsciously, without doing it on purpose. I'll call these your
natural anchors. Here are a few examples, and probably a good start. Do
you ever rest your face in the palm of your hand when sitting? Or put
your hand on your face somewhere and notice you feel more comfortable
in that position? Do you feel more comfortable leaning back or slumping
in a chair. Does crossing your arms sometimes feel comfortable? Do you
feel more comfortable leaning your arm on the arm-rest of a chair if
you feel a little anxious at first....or if your comfortable, is that
an even more comfortable position? I call these your natural
anchors...........The idea now is to create a second anchor that
utilizes the good feelings or relief feelings you get from the natural
anchors. but to make it more accessible.

So, as an example, let's say you feel more relaxed when you rest your
face in the palm of your hand while sitting. As you rest your face in
the palm of your hand, gently touch your palm and forefinger together
as you begin feeling the good relaxing or relieved feeling you feel
when resting your face in the palm of your hand. You simply touch the
thumb and forefinger of your other hand together briefly, with a light
pressure, and then say something unique in your mind, like "natural
anchor" or "comfortable" or "relax" or "aaaaahhhh" or whatever. Just
make the touch and the internal voice unique. Once you do this. Sit up
straight. Take a deep breath. Now, return to the face resting in palm
position and once you feel the good feeling you get in that position,
again, touch the thumb and forefinger of the other hand together while
simultaneously saying your catch phrase mentally "natural anchor",
"realx", "comfortable" or whatever you choose. It has to be the exact
same phrase each time and each time it has to be the same touch. Now,
release the fingers again, sit up, take a nice deep breath........then
repeat. Do this about 10 times and then test it. Sit up straight. Touch
the thumb and forefinger together gently while saying the catch phrase.
Notice if there's a difference in how you feel. It may be slightly
different....no different...or you may feel exactly the way you feel
when resting your face in the palm of your hand.

You can keep reconditioning this as much as you want. Test it and see
if it works for you.........If it does, next step is to see if it works
for alleviating a state like anxiety or stress. In a situation where
you feel stress, fire off the anchor, touching the fingers together and
saying the catch phrase or word....notice if it lowers the stress a
little. Does it have some effect, a lot of an effect, or no effect.

I can see the logic in this, I'll try it at my next deposition, I always have moments of stress during those.

Maximus, I have heard this mentioned before. Though it presently eludes me of who I read this info from, but I have read about using existing anchors as a means to calm oneself down in social settings. For instance, after making a remark when in the presence of a stranger(female) I listen to what she says, and just use the soundbite, hmm. I had no clue I was doing this, until one young lady pointed it out, and said she does that too. So for about 1min we are hmming each other back and forth. Needless to say, that existing anchor does indeed reduce my level of internalized self pressure in social settings. That's a small sound anchor, not like a body gesturing anchor, but for me it seems to do what I have designated it to do. peace, lvoe and succe SS
