I was reading a great post by Disco yesterday about "Breaking Her
Routine" and I decided that I wanted to expand upon it a little
because I personally do this ALL THE TIME.

Basically, here's the deal...

Most people are on autopilot in their interactions with people...
I mean... think about it.

How many times do you ask someone "How are you today?"... and they
return with "fine"...

It's tough to keep any type of conversation going when you reach a
stopping point like this... and this is definitely a "stop" point.
You have to change the subject just to continue on with everything...
there are no smooth transitions.

So, instead of saying "fine" or "okay" or any of the other "canned"
responses...

... switch it up a bit and go for the gusto... go for a little shock
value and "spook" people off of autopilot.

Get them to pay attention to you instead of "glossing" over your
interaction.

Here's an example I use a lot:

Maybe I'll ask someone a safe question like "How are you today?"...
and of course... they always respond with "Fine, how about yourself?"

... and I'll usually say something like... "Pretty sh*tty, actually"... or
"Incredible, you won't believe what just happened (and then go into
storytelling mode, which is always fun).

If I use the "pretty sh*tty" comment... I'll usually respond with
"I'm kidding (with a wink of course)" when their face turns to
shock or if they ask why.

Then... and this is pretty cool... I'll tell them EXACTLY why I told
them "pretty sh*tty"... because I like seeing people's reactions to
the comment... plus the fact that I think that everyone is on
"courteous autopilot".

This usually starts a pretty good conversation where I can lace in
a few stories about a few other people that I've done it to... and
usually challenge the woman to give it a try herself and see the
response.

Plus, this gives her a reason to "get back to me"...

Plus, you're in "teacher" mode... which women get attracted to pretty
quickly... it's a power thing.

On the other hand... if I go with the "incredible" response... I can
usually create a pretty funny story on the fly about how I've been
laughing my ass off at something.

These are REALLY easy ways to start conversations and the shock
value itself definitely frames you as someone fun and IMPORTANT
to listen to... not just some average Joe...
